It’s said frequently that modern life is a little bit too stressful. At work we’re expected to put in long hours and often catch up over the weekends or on holidays. And even in school, modern society (and the job market) has become so competitive that students feel the need to sacrifice sleep, relaxation, and even socialization in an attempt to get ahead.
These are big problems and it’s going to take a lot of time and societal change for them to be dealt with. But in the meantime, a little bit of recreation at the end of a long day can be a nice start toward a less stressful lifestyle. Recreation is a healthy way to manage stress, and often it can mean something as simple as breaking out a game.
A few easy in-home examples are as follows….
Darts is something we talk about often here, and it can be a wonderful tool for stress relief and relaxation in the home. There’s something of a misconception out there that dart boards are cumbersome or even destructive to own. However, they’re easy enough to set up provided you take the proper precautions, and electronic dart boards are a nice alternative that tends to be far lower maintenance. Whatever the course, this gives you a nice game combining focus and precision with competitive energy, all of which can help you to calm your mind after a long day.
The bulk of this article will not focus on video games, but it’s worth mentioning at least one. These days, thanks in particular to indie design companies, there are a lot of video games with soothing designs and almost hypnotic visuals and sound effects. Monument Valley and its sequel are the titles that come up most frequently in this regard, but Alto’s Adventure is another that’s well worth experimenting with if you tend to be a little bit stressed out. Essentially a lighthearted ski arcade, it’s ultimately a shockingly relaxing experience.
Poker is a great game for distracting yourself from the pressures and complications of the real world – and it can be enjoyed in all kinds of different ways these days. To enjoy some social activity as well (a wonderful antidote for work-related stress), you can always organize a poker night among friends. Or, if you just want to get lost in the game itself, modern internet casinos now offer real-life dealers, which makes for ultra-realistic games that feel as interactive as the real thing. Whatever the case, it can be wonderful to have a game that really makes you think.
Jigsaw puzzles don’t get a fair shake. Too often we associate them with childhood activities, or even things we’ve done with our grandparents. The truth of the matter is that a legitimate jigsaw puzzle can actually be a game enjoyed over a long period of time, and with the use of a great deal of concentration. They make bigger puzzles for adults now as well, which keeps them, if not challenging, at least fairly complex.
Settlers Of Catan
Really, we could have listed any number of board or strategy games here. But Settlers Of Catan is a particularly popular option, as well as one that opens the door to a lot of socializing. The more general idea, however, is that playing a board game with friends or family can be a perfect way to unwind after a long day at work or school.
